Can Addiction Have A Physiological Basis ….?

Each person has a unique physiology, and at times, that physiology drives us to “crave” things in order to self-medicate ourselves into some state of balance. If we are too slow, we may want to go faster. If we are too anxious, we might want sedation. If we have a sugar imbalance, we may crave alcohol. There are many faces of what we call an ADDICTIVE BIOCHEMISTRY. Our Sedona and Flagstaff drug rehab and addiction treatment program uses genetic testing and natural neurotransmitter precursors to offset, and often times correct addictive cravings in a way that is nothing short of magic.

There are reasons why one person craves opiates, and another, a stimulant. Why does one person get crazy on two drinks and someone else remains reasonably normal? There are physiological drivers for these things and if those factors are not attended to, failure is the typical result. There are certain “hacks” that address these issues so that the other therapies like counseling, step-work, and spiritual interventions even have an opportunity to work.

Success is more than just getting off of medications. The symptoms that got a person on medications generally come back if the underlying causes are not attended to. In MANY cases, neurotoxic accumulation of poisons based upon individual genetics gets overlooked. Our program focuses on what is called environmental medicine by pulling out heavy metals, hormone-mimicking toxins, and other physiological and neurological stressors. Simultaneously, highly specific neurochemical and hormone precursors and natural forms of top-shelf science support are administered so that getting off of the medications is even possible.

We have a staff many of whom have suffered similarly and actually understand the plight from first-hand experience. Have you ever thought your doctor does not really understand you? Like maybe if they had ever taken the medication you or your loved one was prescribed that they might suddenly stop dismissing your concerns. We get it, we have fought our own struggles here and many of us consider ourselves survivors. Our methods and information are leading the way for the “new doctor” as the curriculum being taught at licensed educational institutions. Sometimes, medications do have a role, and we have found that most people do not have to live as if the medications are the only solution. Genetics, diet, exercise, detoxification as a lifestyle and the people we surround ourselves with are truly the major components of mental health, yet often get neglected in the “hope” that some drug is going to perfectly fix all of our ills. Symptoms are likely the body and mind literally crying for what it needs. Instead, our bodies and minds tend to get further neglected and dismissed when we dump drugs on them in complete disregard for any other changes. Our mission is to reverse this disregard and to use the most optimum scientific approaches to make life actually worth living again.

My story is unique due to my professional background working in the industry of behavioral health and substance abuse. I have been struggling with spin the wheel on various addictions throughout most of my adult life starting with opiates (Percocet, oxycoden, ambian in 2006) to alcohol in 2018 and most recently tramadol and Kratom. I have managed to maintain a career in spite of my addictions always being the person who was willing to help others while never truly helping myself. Having spent the first part of my career in adolescent treatment, then psychiatric hospital, and most recently adult substance abuse with a holistic focus, I had a well rounded knowledge on treatment options in the industry. I also had a unique choice to chose how I would detox having usually done detox the harder way which is a quick 3-10 day rapid taper. I had always chosen outpatient as my go-to in order to survive and complete the basics so I could get on with my life. This was the first time I decided to truly immerse myself by checking into a residential level of care and work on the core issues and neurological deficiencies that have been driving my addictive behaviors most of my adult life. I chose ATMC because they were the most comprehensive program that addressed the diet (gluten, diary, caffeine, and sugar free) along with being all organic and environmentally toxic free. In addition, they have pioneered the most comprehensive amino acid protocols to support the body during withdrawals. Most programs do NOT include these protocols which are vital to rebuilding the brain. If I couldn’t rebuild my brain and body, I wouldn’t be alive long enough to do the deep therapeutic trauma work which was also part of their program. I’m calling my experience at ATMC: “My gentle detox journey” I know both personally and professionally there isn’t another program that exists like this one. Traditionally, I would have had to check myself into a detox for a rapid taper and instead I was able to admit to ATMC with a goal of reducing my medication over the course of 30-60 days (I set my individualized pace with their case management team). Week one being maintenance and acclimate to the program. Tapers are medically monitored and collaborated with ND physician with amino acid support supplements. Everyday (M-F) I went to the detox shop where I would exercise 20-30 minutes, hot sauna for 1-2 hours, and participate in various spa services designed to further detox my body and align my energy. Services such as ionic foot bath, castor oil pack, magnesium lavender foot bath, glutathione nebulizer, colonic, IV vitamin infusions, acupuncture, massage, and reiki. I could schedule different services daily throughout the week to combat the detox symptoms I was feeling daily through out my taper. I need to take a moment and express that during this entire process I had the most amazing staff/healers that were not only there to uplift me and validate me… but they never treated myself or anyone there like an addict. We were all just people tapering toxic medication/addictive substances that no longer worked for our bodies. Most of my peers were professionals… 2 nurses, chiropractor, multi-million dollar real estate developer. I know there are many individuals that debate with themselves as to whether they would meet criteria to admit in-patient thinking only severe addiction that has cost individuals their job, family, and home would merit this level of care. I’m grateful I didn’t have those life circumstances. Majority of us participating at ATMC were desperately seeking to find a way to connect to our bodies, mind, and soul. And they provided us every opportunity to connect. I accomplished my taper within 25 days and discharged at 35 days. Again, industry standard would never allow what I experienced. It brings tears to my eyes to think of this immersive yet gentle detox that truly began my the critical healing that I desperately needed for my body, mind and soul. I would recommend anyone struggling to consider this comprehensive healing program.

I wish so much to be able to get the opportunity to be treated here but it's just too much money. I think this is more for the wealthy not a regular 9-5.

I stopped by this location during a visit in Sedona, AZ. I spoke with Krystal and she discussed the herbal and holistic remedies that are used here. They also have a variety of staff that provide different services. Wonderful facility!

Without exception, Alternative To Meds saved my life...! My family went through a 4 to 5 year journey to discover an accurate diagnosis for a successful path for recovery to no avail. That is...until we found and I attended ATMC. The staff and team went above and beyond the call of duty to determine and carefully treat me for toxic body burden, which was causing me severely anxiety, depression, insomnia, memory loss, etc. I have a new lease on life and would recommend ATMC for anyone who wants the full attention and expertise of a medical team, alongside proven alternative approaches to health. – Respectfully.

In a particularly critical point of our daughter’s addiction, when she felt she had little desire to get better, had little or no self worth, and had little to live for the ATMC personnel, Krystal and Dr Libby were there for our daughter and for us, and in our opinion, saved her life to which we are ever so grateful. Krystal, Dr Libby and the entire staff went above and beyond what was necessary to get our daughter the help she needed to focus on herself, to overcome all obstacles, and re-establish her self worth. They provided therapy, consultation, healthy diet, supplements, and the road map for her to follow to her sobriety! If it was not for the care, the kindness, compassion, guidance, and love that Krystal, Dr Libby and the entire ATMC Staff provided 24/7 for over 60 days for our daughter, she may not be with us today!! Thank you to all at ATMC and May God Bless you with All Good Things!! With Love and Thanks Forever, Dennis & Mary Kostic
