Medication-Assisted Treatment at BAART Antioch

Our team has years of experience providing medication-assisted treatment (MAT), a well-rounded approach to care. MAT involves the use of medication to reduce your withdrawal symptoms and cravings. The medicine you take will also block the effects of other opioids, lowering your urge to use them. You’ll work with your doctor to find a treatment that helps you function well as you progress toward an opioid-free life.

Every MAT program includes individual therapy with an experienced counselor. Your therapist will help you identify your triggers for use and find ways to manage difficult situations without opioids. Each patient who participates in MAT has unique treatment goals that they can explore during counseling sessions. You and your counselor will work together to find the solution for your needs.

Methadone had its first application in opioid use disorder treatment in the 1960s. We still use this medicine today because of its positive results throughout the decades. During a methadone-based treatment program, you’ll visit your clinic every day to take your medication. These appointments will help you stay committed to treatment and adjust to the MAT experience. As you progress through your program, you may earn the privilege to take medicine home in accordance with the law.

Buprenorphine MAT — Another Safe, Effective Option

Buprenorphine received FDA approval for opioid use disorder treatment in 2002. It has an upper limit of effectiveness that discourages misuse and allows for safe dosing. A buprenorphine compound called Suboxone® also contains naloxone, another medication that can help you follow your treatment plan. The naloxone in Suboxone® causes uncomfortable effects when it’s injected, helping you resist the urge to misuse. When you participate in a buprenorphine MAT program, you’ll get a prescription and take the medicine at home.
