If you’re reading this right now, life is probably a bit hard. Maybe a lot hard. And maybe you don’t even know where to start on this search. I looked at all the places. I did my research. We were desperate, but if a residential placement had to happen, I wanted it to be excellent so we would never have to do it again. The first thing which made BNI stand out was that they hired doctoral level therapists to work with the students and their families. I’m in the counseling field myself and knew we would need someone very experienced and knowledgable due to the complicated nature of my daughter’s situation. The second thing that made BNI stand out was Doug who was in charge through the entire admissions process. Of all the places I called, Doug was the only one who didn’t just tell me the (astronomical) price of their program. He immediately asked for my insurance info, called my insurance company, and then came back with a shockingly affordable proposal. BNI is not just out to make a buck. It was clear every step of the way that their true desire was to help these hurting kids and their families. Thirdly, through our time at BNI I came to realize what a difference it made to be in a program owned by adolescent psychiatrists. The doctors were so invested! And not just in figuring out the right meds (which they did superbly). In my daughter’s first week there Dr. O was taking the girls out on an early morning hike to look at plants. This would not happen in any other treatment program! Dr Schwartz was our therapist and she was simply amazing. Able to connect with each member of the family, guide us through hard conversations while validating each of our experiences, and seeing the best in us. We learned new ways to work through the hard parts of life together. She was priceless. This program focuses on teaching the students how to live and cope once they are back home. A skills based approach that really works. My daughter has been home for about 7 months and I will be forever grateful for the changes she went through at BNI. She says, with all seriousness, that she would probably be dead if it weren’t for BNI. While that is hard to hear, it only increases my gratitude for this program. Are things perfect? Of course not! They didn’t send back a robot. But I do have the best version of my daughter back and there is nothing more for which I could ask.

Our son spent about 6 weeks at BNI during this year’s pandemic and resulting shelter-in-place orders. While the shelter-in-place amplified and brought his issues to a head, ultimately landing him in residential care, it was also a true blessing and window of opportunity to get him the help he’s needed for some time. He’s been struggling with a mood disorder for several years and had been self-medicating with marijuana and other substances, so he had a dual diagnosis and needed intensive help to address both. It is a scary thing for a parent to be faced with choices like these when you realize things cannot go on as they have and for the safety and well-being of your child and the entire household, you need to seek a higher level of care. I am so thankful we found BNI when we did. From the start, the admissions process was completely different from other places. Doug was so kind and responsive and arranged for a doctor-to-doctor conversation to determine whether BNI was a good fit for our son and visa-versa. He explained that BNI is doctor-owned and operated and once admitted, we immediately got a contact list of all of his providers. Almost all of them were doctors. I also got a call and text right away from his primary therapist, Dr. S., who assured us he’d arrived safely and was acclimating, and would be in touch regularly, and she was. We had regular family sessions, parent sessions and family visits via tele-health, and of course he had a full slate of his own sessions every day. She also kept us posted on his progress and weekly team meetings and made a plan for his return home. The other providers- his psychiatrist, physician, clinical pharmacist, nurses, counselors, case manager, etc. were also extremely responsive whenever I had a question. As I said, it was a difficult thing to do, but we’re grateful the SIP pushed us to get him the help he needed. And of any of the places we researched and considered, BNI was absolutely the right place for him, and a place where we felt safe and comfortable sending our son.

BNI is hands-down the best therapy and psychiatry in the 2.5 years of our daughter’s mental health treatment journey. She entered BNI very unstable and exhibiting dangerous behaviors, including self-harming and suicidal behaviors. With the treatment at BNI, she made what she calls a ‘u-turn’ and has now gone over 3 months without harming and suicide attempts. We truly believe BNI saved her life. There were some administrative hiccups that caused frustration, but the exceptional treatment far outweighed those.

If you have an adolescent with addiction , there is no better care than BNI. They are head and shoulders above any other treatment facility. They care for the “whole” child. The medically surpervised detox being the FIRST order of business, your child can detox , they can’t do it on their own , f d ont believe your child if they say they quit on their own. It’s impossible. Especially if it’s an opioid addiction . If your insurance pays for this program, admit your child . You can have peace of mind, , your child is well cared for.
