People who abuse alcohol and other drugs rarely stop to consider that they are also abusing their bodies, eroding their mental functioning, and impairing their ability to relate to other people. Bringing these issues into focus for those who are addicted to chemical substances represents one key thread in the complex fabric of the treatment and recovery processes at Canon Human Services. Canon, through its Brown Scapular Program, has been helping people overcome chemical dependency and resolve drug-related problems since 1988. A non-profit community service corporation, Canon provides drug-free counseling and support services both on an outpatient basis and in a residential setting. Although residential services are currently available only to male Inpatient treatment/recovery and supportive services at Canon Human Services are provided directly by the Brown Scapular Program staff made available through cooperating agencies, or by referral. Canon’s facility is accessible and its services accommodating to persons who are physically handicapped. Addiction to drugs or alcohol is disruptive, debilitating, and potentially deadly. It can be very easy for an individual to fall into the traps that abuse and addiction offer, and once you are there it may seem like you can never find a safe way out. While there are many... Addiction can easily derail your life or the life of a loved one. Once addiction takes hold of you, the rest of your life becomes less important and secondary, and the only thing your body and mind want any more are the illicit drugs, alcohol, or prescription medications you have... Alcohol addiction and abuse can take a horrible toll on you mentally and physically, and it can damage the relationships in your life, taking others down along with you. Suffering from an addiction like this can be very difficult for you to deal with, and it can be even tougher... Recovering from a chemical dependency is far from an easy thing for you. Your body and mind have become so accustomed to having the illicit or prescription drugs each day that they do all they can to rebel against your efforts to stop using. It can seem like an insurmountable... Many people today deal with substance abuse and addiction difficulties each day without knowing how they can get help. For those of us that may have a family member or friend fighting with an addiction, we want to work to get the person close to us the assistance they need...
